Market snapshot
United States data center market: key facts
Capacity under construction or planned (3,964 MW) is 3.2 times the operational base of 1,224 MW.
The three largest operators by operational capacity, Centersquare, CyrusOne and NTT DATA, hold 60% of tracked operational MW.
PowerHouse Data Centers has the largest development pipeline in United States: 2,635 MW under construction or planned.
The largest operational facility we track is Centersquare Sterling IAD1 (Centersquare, Sterling) at 143 MW.
The largest project in the pipeline is PowerHouse PAX-1 (1,350 MW, planned).
Northern Virginia is the largest cluster: 103 of 235 facilities and 31% of tracked capacity.
By type, the tracker lists 138 colocation, 95 hyperscale and 2 enterprise facilities.
3 facilities publish a PUE figure; the lowest is 1.50 at Richmond Data Center (Flexential) and the median is 1.69.
76 of 235 facilities have a capacity stated by their source; the totals above count only those.

Capacity, size, year, tier and PUE appear only when the source states them. Nothing is estimated.
Status: operational, under construction (building work started) or planned (announced or permitted, not yet under construction).

Questions
How many data centers are there in United States?
DC Market Insights tracks 235 data centers in United States as of October 2026: 156 operational, 23 under construction and 56 planned, run by 48 operators. The count grows as we verify more sites.
What is the data center capacity of United States?
Tracked operational capacity in United States is 1,224 MW, with 1,128 MW under construction and 2,836 MW planned. These totals use the capacity each source states (IT load where given) and cover 76 of 235 tracked facilities.
Which companies operate the most data center capacity in United States?
By tracked operational capacity, the largest operators in United States are Centersquare (366 MW), CyrusOne (265 MW) and NTT DATA (107 MW).
Where are the data centers in United States located?
The largest clusters by tracked capacity are Northern Virginia (103 facilities), Central Pennsylvania (2 facilities) and Fredericksburg VA (2 facilities). The map above shows every site.
Which new data centers are being built in United States?
We track 1,128 MW under construction and 2,836 MW planned. The largest projects are PowerHouse PAX-1 (1,350 MW), PowerHouse 95 (900 MW) and PowerHouse Pacific (265 MW).
Where does this data come from?
Every facility comes from a page we opened: the operator’s own website or announcement, a stock-exchange filing, a planning or government record, or a named trade publication. A second analyst re-opens the source and checks the name, location, status and capacity before the row is published. We do not copy other data center directories.
What does the MW figure mean?
We show IT (critical) capacity when the source states it, otherwise the total or utility capacity the source gives, and say which in the facility’s note. When a source gives no capacity, the field stays empty. We never estimate it.
How exact are the map locations?
When the source gives an address or coordinates we use them. Otherwise the dot sits at the centre of the facility’s city (marked as approximate), using the GeoNames gazetteer.
How often is it updated?
The tracker is updated every week as new facilities are announced and existing ones change status. Each row shows the date it was last checked.
Can I get the data in Excel?
Yes. Each country with 50 or more facilities has a Capacity Sheet in Excel with every facility, its source link, the status history and summaries. Our analysts can also prepare an operator extract or a custom cut.
Need the full list, or a capacity view of one market?
Our analysts prepare country and operator extracts in Excel, capacity pipelines and site-selection briefings.
