What is in the water and energy use dataset?

Data center sustainability data shows how much water and electricity a facility uses, how efficiently (PUE and WUE), how much of its power is renewable and what emissions it reports.

Water and power use now decide permits, public support and investor appetite. Regulators in Europe and elsewhere are starting to require these numbers; we collect what is already disclosed, facility by facility.

What is inside the dataset

One row per fact, linked by id to the facility, the operator and the market, so it joins with every other DC Market Insights dataset.

Why you can rely on it

  1. Primary sources first. We never copy data center directories, research publishers or press-release wires. This dataset is built from:
    • Operator sustainability and annual reports
    • National data center registers and energy efficiency reporting
    • Water authority permits
  2. The words and the date. Each value is stored with the source link, the exact sentence it comes from and the date it was true.
  3. A second, independent check. Every value is checked again against its source before it is stored. Values that cannot be confirmed are dropped.
  4. History, not overwrites. A new value is a new record, so changes in dates, MW and status stay visible.
  5. Our estimates are labelled. Anything we compute, such as a value per MW, is marked derived or DC Market Insights estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does a data center use?

It depends on the cooling design and the climate. Our dataset records the water use each operator reports, facility by facility, with the year and the method.

What is a good PUE?

PUE compares total facility power with IT power; 1.0 would mean no overhead. We record the PUE each operator reports with its year and basis, so values can be compared fairly.
