What is in the electricity rates dataset?

Data center electricity rates are the prices utilities charge large customers for power: the energy rate per kWh, demand charges per kW and, more and more, special tariffs written for very large loads such as data centers.

Power is the largest running cost of a data center, and new large-load tariffs change the economics of whole markets. Comparing them needs the same units and dates across utilities.

What is inside the dataset

One row per fact, linked by id to the facility, the operator and the market, so it joins with every other DC Market Insights dataset.

Why you can rely on it

  1. Primary sources first. We never copy data center directories, research publishers or press-release wires. This dataset is built from:
    • Energy regulators and their dockets
    • Official energy statistics (for example the US Energy Information Administration)
    • Utility tariff books
  2. The words and the date. Each value is stored with the source link, the exact sentence it comes from and the date it was true.
  3. A second, independent check. Every value is checked again against its source before it is stored. Values that cannot be confirmed are dropped.
  4. History, not overwrites. A new value is a new record, so changes in dates, MW and status stay visible.
  5. Our estimates are labelled. Anything we compute, such as a value per MW, is marked derived or DC Market Insights estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What do data centers pay for electricity?

It depends on the utility, the tariff and the size of the load. Our dataset gives the published industrial rates, demand charges and large-load tariffs by utility, with dates.

What is a large-load tariff?

A tariff written for very large new customers such as data centers. It often adds minimum bills, longer contracts or collateral so other customers do not carry the cost of new grid capacity.
